Lucknow Chikankari is done on various materials like Cotton, Silk, Chiffon/ Georgette etc. and the embroidery thread is treaidtionally White, though other coloured threads are often used these days. Chikankari cannot be done well on thick cloth/ fabric and hence, all items with Chikankari make use of thinner (breathable) fabric varieties.

- The Top piece is ~2.4m long; Bottom piece Dupatta are each ~2.1m long. Width of all 3 pieces is ~1.1m. All the 3 pieces are of TERE-RUBIA (a hybrid of Rubia Cotton & Polyester, approx. 60-40. Rubia Cotton is a lightweight pure cotton fabric, which is blended with Polyester (or Terene) to render is suitable for dress materials. The lightness, softness & the somewhat granular texture of Tere-Rubia make it excellent for Embroidery.
- While Chikan embroidery is present on all the 3 pieces (Top, Bottom & Dupatta), the major embroidery work is on the Top piece, in the form of "Gala Buti" (floral designs on the neck area) or "Full Front Chikankari" (floral & other patterns along the entire front length). The Salwar Suit material is pre-shrunk (no further shrinkage is expected) and machine wash safe with no color bleed. However, for maximum product life, separate and careful hand wash or dry cleaning is always better.
- IMPORTANT: Since Tere-Rubia material is fairly translucent (semi-transparent), the Top piece (Kameez) must be stitched with inner lining cloth or "Astar".
